This safety measure is in place while we repair a burst fire sprinkler pipe in the underground parking garage; we anticipate the system will be fully restored by 10:00pm tonight.

Please take note of the following:

  1. The Nexus Building and the Nexus Underground Parking Garage remain open for normal operations.
  2. There was no damage to the building or property, and no injuries occurred from the incident.
  3. The Fire Marshal has inspected the premises and authorized the building to remain open; the Fire Panel has been returned to normal operations.
  4. The Fire Watch will be conducted and remain in effect until the fire sprinkler pipe is fully restored, which is expected to occur around 10:00pm today, May 4.

In accordance with Section F901.7 of the New York State Fire Code, this Fire Watch involves implementation of a temporary fire protection measure in situations where fire safety systems are impaired, inoperable, or undergoing maintenance. This entails assigning trained personnel to monitor the affected areas continuously to watch for signs of fire and take any necessary action to ensure the safety of the occupants and property.

Thank you for your understanding and support of our community鈥檚 continued safety and well-being.

Adelphi is making it even easier for working professionals to earn a career-boosting MBA.

Starting this fall, the University’s Robert B. Willumstad School of Business鈥攔ecognized as a Best Business School by The Princeton Review for eight years running鈥攚ill begin offering its Flex MBA program at Adelphi’s new Manhattan Center on Fifth Avenue and 44th Street, just steps away from Grand Central Station and easily accessible by subway, bus and commuter train.

The Flex MBA, which can be completed in as little as one year, is designed to meet the schedules of busy, career-minded adults. The program is conveniently presented in a hybrid format, with on-site and online classes held in the evening.

Professionals looking to advance their business career will have three other options at the Manhattan Center starting this fall: graduate certificate programs in business analytics and human resource management, as well as a human resource management concentration in the MA in General Psychology program.

All four programs are also offered at Adelphi’s main campus in Garden City, New York, and are part of a suite of 13 graduate business degree and certificate programs. The Willumstad School is also known for its undergraduate programs and was recently recognized as a Best Undergraduate Business School by Poets&Quants, ranking ahead of all other Long Island institutions.

We spoke with MaryAnne Hyland, PhD, dean of the Willumstad School, to learn more about the programs and the tuition-saving Manhattan Advantage Award scholarships available to Adelphi alumni.

What makes Flex MBA such a flexible option for working professionals?

The Flex MBA program is a 36-credit program that offers many convenient options for students. Students can earn their degree in one year or choose to study part-time in our two-year track. Courses will be in a hybrid format, with some class sessions held in the evening at the Manhattan Center and others conducted online. This setup offers the convenience of online learning with the personalized support and networking associated with in-person classes.

Is the Flex MBA program only for students with a business background?

No, not everyone comes with a business background. We have students with healthcare backgrounds and students with experience in various other fields outside of business, and we help to acclimate them. We provide online modules to help them understand some of the business basics so they’re ready to go once they start the program.

Are the graduate certificate programs flexible too?

We鈥檒l be offering two certificate programs at the Manhattan Center: the business analytics certificate and the human resource management certificate. The courses for those programs fold right into the Flex MBA program. So if a student wants to start out by earning a certificate and then enrolling in the MBA program, they can take these three to four courses, and those credits carry right in. These certificates offer a nice way to test the waters of what it’s like to be in school again and the ability to walk away with a strong credential, even if they don鈥檛 want to pursue a full master鈥檚 degree.

Adelphi alumni can earn their MBA at the Manhattan Center for only $20,000. How is that possible?

We are really excited to offer this opportunity to Adelphi alumni as a way to kick off the opening of the Manhattan Center. It works by combining two scholarships: our new Manhattan Advantage Award scholarship for $10,000 and our Alumni Award for Graduate Study scholarship, which covers $5,000 per year. If students take two years to complete this program on a part-time basis and they receive $5,000 a year in addition to the $10,000, one-time Manhattan Advantage Award, they can complete their degree for under $20,000, which is quite reasonable for an AACSB-accredited [Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business] program.

How does the Flex MBA program differ from other MBA programs?

We are trying to give students the skills that they need to be successful in today’s workplace. The Flex MBA program, for example, is a relatively new program that focuses on solving business problems. We have problem-solving days built into the program where students come in鈥攐utside of their classes鈥攖o work in teams on a project for a real company. They do this first without AI to work on their critical thinking skills, and then they use AI so they can see the differences between what they generated as a team and what AI assisted them with. That’s a distinctive feature of our program that we鈥檙e very proud of. We think it’s unique, and we get great feedback from our students about it.

It’s also the personalized attention that students really say makes their education special and valuable. When we ask students why they chose Adelphi, they almost always mention that it’s a place where professors know your name. There are small classes, and we have dedicated staff there to assist the students with finding jobs and internships.

What are your hopes for the first year of the Flex MBA program at the Manhattan Center?

I hope that it’s a program where students really thrive. My hope would be that the students who participate in this kickoff year of the program have an excellent learning experience in our brand-new, state-of-the-art facility.

Adelphi鈥檚 innovative MS in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program is coming to the new, state-of-the-art Manhattan Center in Fall 2026, expanding opportunities for students to advance their careers in tech, engineering, and other in-demand fields impacted by AI.

“A lot of people are looking to upskill and understand how their professionalization can remain relevant in an AI agent workforce,” said Anil Venkatesh, PhD, director of the program and associate professor of mathematics and computer science. “We wanted to offer this program at a place that would be convenient for working professionals, and the Manhattan Center made a lot of sense.”

By expanding this program to the new state-of-the-art facility, located just steps from Grand Central Station at Fifth Avenue and 44th Street, Adelphi is making it even easier for students to develop these career-defining skills, network with other forward thinkers, and explore job opportunities.

鈥淲e are expecting to see a lot of professionals from diverse job backgrounds who will bring some really interesting perspectives,” Dr. Venkatesh said. “That will only increase the overall engagement of courses.鈥

The MS in AI and Machine Learning is just one of the programs in the first wave of 13 graduate and professional offerings coming to the Manhattan Center. Students can choose from degree and certificate programs in business, education, healthcare, psychology, and social work.

A world of career options

The AI program, which launched this year on Adelphi’s Garden City campus, is designed to prepare the first generation of AI professionals for advanced careers in technology, government, healthcare, financial services, logistics, e-commerce, and virtually any other field. Current job titles include AI engineer, machine learning engineer, data scientist, data analyst, and business analyst.

Courses in the master’s degree program combine practical, real-world learning experiences with deep theoretical knowledge that can be applied to AI models鈥攏ot just now, but as technology evolves.

鈥淯ltimately, the theory of AI is not something that was just invented,” Dr. Venkatesh said. “It has existed for quite some time. And understanding that theory is going to make it so that you can plug and play with whatever new model or paradigm comes along.鈥

The program is also built to adapt to new AI careers and applications as they continue to emerge. The program’s seminar, for example, is updated every year with new tools and input from speakers currently working in the industry. And Dr. Venkatesh鈥檚 course on artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms is consistently refreshed with the latest cutting-edge algorithms and best engineering practices.

As Dr. Venkatesh said, 鈥淲e’re both staying up-to-date with contemporary discoveries and innovations and incorporating foundational math and statistics that will be useful no matter where the industry goes.鈥

Customizing AI education for different professions

AI isn鈥檛 only impacting technology companies and engineering careers. It鈥檚 being applied across sectors, including government, healthcare, and financial services.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had students who鈥檝e worked in programming-heavy disciplines,” Dr. Venkatesh said. 鈥淏ut we also expect to see folks with backgrounds in statistics as it relates to life sciences and healthcare because AI tools are tremendously valuable in those disciplines.”

To that end, Dr. Venkatesh makes a pointed effort to customize his Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Algorithms course for students’ professional goals.

When I assign projects, I explicitly invite students to counter-propose a different topic if there’s something specifically suited to their particular professionalization,” he said. “As long as it’s comparably challenging and relevant to the course, I accept the proposal.鈥

Students responded enthusiastically to the invitation, proposing and carrying out research projects in healthcare, bioinformatics, sports analytics, financial services, and business analytics.

Thinking ahead to the fall, Dr. Venkatesh looks forward to welcoming the program鈥檚 first cohort to the Manhattan Center and continuing to teach as this exciting field evolves.

鈥淭he other professors and I who put this program together really love teaching it,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e excited by the format of the course and the type of student that we’re orienting toward. This is some of the most fun teaching we’ve had in a long time.鈥

This spring marks a milestone for communities across Long Island. The initial participants in two grant-funded programs implemented through the 糖心传媒 College of Professional and Continuing Studies are nearing completion of their certification courses.

鈥淲e partner with community groups that directly service community members as a way to provide opportunities for upward mobility for folks to get access and entry into careers that offer a livable wage,鈥 says Sandra Castro, PhD, senior associate dean of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies at 糖心传媒.

For the students in these programs, earning a certification is the first step toward a healthcare career and the financial stability that comes with it.

Preparing Hempstead Adults for In-Demand Healthcare Roles

Two students wearing blue latex gloves practice a phlebotomy technique on a medical training arm model connected to IV tubing in a classroom setting.

Students practicing phlebotomy techniques through Adelphi’s partnership with Hempstead Schools Adult Education.

When 糖心传媒 launched a partnership with and in late 2025, the response from the community was immediate. To identify and enroll students, the program turned to Hempstead Union Free School District鈥檚 Adult and Community Education Program, and demand quickly outpaced expectations. 鈥淲e started with one cohort, and then about six weeks later, another cohort鈥攁nd people are still calling to enroll,鈥 says , director of adult and community education at Hempstead Union Free School District.

Roughly 36 students received a full scholarship and are expected to complete the certification course by June. 鈥淭his scholarship is really impactful,鈥 Gottlieb says. 鈥淒epending on the school, this program could cost $4,000 or more. For someone making minimum wage, that expense can be difficult to meet.鈥

Many of the enrolled students came through Hempstead鈥檚 adult education program, and the district also hosted the in-person classes. Students pursuing careers in vital healthcare and social service fields were eligible to apply for the fully funded scholarships.

鈥淭here is a pressing need for adults to obtain credentials efficiently, in ways that allow for rapid entry into sustainable careers,鈥 Gottlieb notes. Many adult learners in the Hempstead Adult and Community Education Program are navigating day-to-day financial responsibilities while working demanding jobs, which makes participation in extended programs impractical. In response to these realities, courses have been intentionally structured differently from traditional models, allowing students to complete certification within a condensed time frame of approximately three to four months.

鈥淭he biggest benefit is that students are learning how to invest in themselves and think about their future, and it gives a sense of dignity and opportunity,鈥 Gottlieb says.

Supporting Formerly Incarcerated Women on the Path to Healthcare Careers

A group of people seated around a conference table during a meeting, with 糖心传媒 branded yellow folders on the table and a monitor displaying a virtual meeting in the background.

Women re-entering the workforce are learning skills to make them workforce-ready via Adelphi’s partnership with New Hour for Women and Children LI.

This May, the first student cohort will graduate from Empowerment Through Employment: 糖心传媒 and health careers program. Funded by a grant from , this program benefits formerly incarcerated women through New Hour For Women and Children LI鈥檚 network of community programs and support services. 鈥淭hree out of four are moms, so we recognize that the need for higher education and licensure is really critical to creating a safe stable home and economic stability,鈥 says Serena Martin 鈥05, founder and executive director of New Hour For Women and Children LI.

The program connects women to Adelphi鈥檚 professional certification courses to prepare New Hour For Women and Children LI members for in-demand healthcare careers such as clinical medical assistants, , , , and more. The grant also provided women with laptops and the software they need to complete their certification. 鈥淎 lot of funders and higher education folks underestimate the cost for returning students who are living paycheck to paycheck,鈥 Martin says.

The courses, which are fully online and asynchronous, were designed to accommodate students鈥 competing priorities. 鈥淢ost women are already working, they鈥檙e already parenting,鈥 Martin says. 鈥淏eing able to do the course on their own time, at their own pace鈥攁fter work or after they put the kids to bed鈥攊s really amazing.鈥

To ensure success after graduation, Adelphi provides support with r茅sum茅-building assistance, career counseling, interview preparation and job search assistance, individual counseling, and externship placement. Students also receive biweekly check-ins, in-person lunches with Adelphi staff and a dedicated case manager.

Members like Tiara [last name withheld] exemplify the drive and determination of women participating in the program. The clinical medical assistant program certificate she鈥檚 earned is just one credential on the path to becoming a certified medical assistant.

Funding currently covers two cohorts over two years. The next will start in June with another group of women. Interest in the program has been strong since the launch鈥攖here鈥檚 already a waitlist for the next cohort鈥攁nd New Hour For Women and Children LI and Adelphi are actively seeking funding for additional cohorts in the future.

鈥淥ur women are so thirsty to work,鈥 Martin says. 鈥淵ou will not find a more responsible worker than someone who understands what it鈥檚 like to have lost their freedom and is now looking to fight hard and get back on their feet.鈥

Recognizing these challenges, 糖心传媒 is taking aim at solutions that can help students earn their degrees while caring for children or elder family members. Whether that means starting school for the first time or returning to complete their education, the Caring for Caregivers scholarship aims to offer nontraditional students support while they earn their degree.

The scholarship, awarded by the Adelphi College of Professional and Continuing Studies (CPCS), strives to provide support for adult students of any kind. Sandra Castro, PhD, senior associate dean of CPCS, highlights the variety of students the scholarship helps. 鈥淲e have a whole generation of students that are caring for siblings, parents, relatives. Adelphi says 鈥榃e see you鈥 and we want to support you in making your academic career,鈥 she said.

The Caring for Caregivers scholarship has recently expanded from students in CPCS to any student at Adelphi. 鈥淚 was floored by how many applications we received,鈥 said Dr. Castro. The growing number of applicants highlights the importance of providing assistance to students who are parents or caregivers at Adelphi, and how impactful more family-friendly policies could be on campus.

Meet the Awardees

Haley Friday, one of this year鈥檚 recipients of the scholarship, returned to school to study after taking a semester off to care for her grandmother. Speaking about CPCS and the asynchronous learning it offers, she said, 鈥淚t gave me the flexibility to continue school while still managing my everyday life and caregiving responsibilities, which meant a lot to me.鈥 For students like Friday, the scholarship not only recognizes her, but provides some much-needed relief from juggling school and caregiving. 鈥淚t has also helped me cover out-of-pocket school expenses, which gave me some financial breathing room and even allowed me to do something nice for myself for the first time in a long time. That means more than people probably realize.鈥

Fellow scholarship winner Jquan Collins said of his role as a caregiver, 鈥淚 take pride in being dependable. To me, being a caregiver is not just about big moments, but also about the everyday effort, patience and responsibility that comes with putting others first.鈥 Collins, who is studying business administration, said the motivation to attend Adelphi came from a desire to open doors both professionally and personally. Becoming a father strengthened that motivation. 鈥淚 want to set an example of hard work, discipline and perseverance for my children,鈥 he said.

For Rachel Freeman, who works full time while caring for her three-year-old, going back to school was important to her in order to challenge her and help her in her career path. She said, 鈥淕oing back to school felt like the right way to push myself and get out of my comfort zone.鈥 For Freeman, who is studying , being chosen was incredible news. Even simply hearing about the scholarship made an impact on her. 鈥淚 was relieved that at the university level there was some formal recognition that working, going to school and being a parent was hard!鈥 she said. 鈥淚t sounds obvious鈥攐f course it鈥檚 difficult鈥攂ut I was encouraged by this simple statement of support, and decided to apply for the scholarship.鈥

The Impact of the Scholarship

Across the board, the scholarship winners shared a similar sentiment: The recognition of being chosen, and the acknowledgement of how difficult balancing school and taking care of loved ones can be, made a serious impact. 鈥淭his scholarship means a lot to me because it recognizes not only my academic efforts, but also the responsibilities I carry outside of school,鈥 said Collins. 鈥淚t serves as motivation to keep pushing forward, even when balancing work, school and family life feels overwhelming.鈥

This scholarship is made possible by the Women鈥檚 Giving Circle, a group whose collective philanthropy celebrates, promotes and supports Adelphi and its students, faculty and programs. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e supported us the last four years in the different iterations of the scholarship,鈥 said Dr. Castro. The Women鈥檚 Giving Circle, funded by member donations, is run by a team of volunteers who work to make it possible to provide financial aid to students. It鈥檚 through their continued support that students like Friday can keep taking care of the ones they love.

鈥淭his scholarship not only supports my education, but it also supports the work and care I give to the people who depend on me every day!鈥
